8. Visual Disorders Flashcards
Myopia
Disorder of focussing of light. Light is focused in front of the retina.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Disorder of reception of light. Central vision is affected or lost due to the presence of drusen (yellow deposits) in the retina.
Glaucoma
Disorder of conduction to the brain. Mid-peripheral vision lost before central, causing tunnel vision.
What causes myopia?
________ is caused by abnormal enlargement of the eyeball, which stretches the retina and the choroid. It has environmental and genetic causes.
What causes age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
_________ is caused by drusen (yellow deposits) in the retina. Drusen are caused by accumulation of waste products from the digestion of photoreceptor tips which leads to progressive failure of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) function. Loss of RPE function causes photoreceptor death.
What causes glaucoma?
________ is caused by increased intraocular pressure, which damages nerve fibres that pass through the optic nerve head, causing vision loss.
Increased intraocular pressure is caused by blocked drainage of aqueous humour.
Myopia increases risk of….
__________ increases risk of:
- Cataract
- Glaucoma
- Retinal detachment
- Myopic maculopathy
What decreases the incidence of myopia?
Time spent outdoors decreases _______________.
