What is a UTI ?
an infection of any part of the urinary tract

an infection of upper part of urinary tract (kidneys & ureter) aka ‘pyelonephritis’
definition of lower UTI ?
an infection of the bladder
uncomplicated UTI caused by ?
typical uropathogens in a non-pregnant women with no known relevant anatomical or functional abnormalities of the urinary tract and no predisposing comorbidities
Complicated UTI’s have an increased likelihood of complication such as what ?
- treatment failure
- persistent
- ascending or recurrent infection
e.g. pregnancy , men, abnormalities of urinary tract, catheterised , renal disease, immunocompromise (diabetes)

2 or more episodes of UTI in 6 months or 3 or more episodes in one year
Recurrent UTI more common in women and can be due to what ?
- relapse - same strain of microorganism
- reinfection - different strain of microorganism
catheter associated UTI is what ?
symptomatic infection of bladder or kidney in catheterised person
what is asymtpomatic bacteriuria ?
the presence of significant bacteria in the urine, as a result of colonisation of the urinary tract, without symptoms or signs of infection

How do bacteria enter the urinary tract ?
- retrograge - ascending infection from urethra
- haematogenous - via blood / lymphatics
- direct - catheter, surgery , instrumentation
