Aphordite, Pygmalion and Galatea
Who is priapus
The apotrophaic (means to turn away things that harm you) power of an erect phalus. People would put sculpture or painting of him in front of their home to protect their home.
does priapus show up in myths
not really
How is hestia like priapus? what is she goddess of
She’s fixed immovable in the center of every home. Hearth goddess that protects the home. (also virgin goddess)
How was aphordite born in hesiod vs homer
In hesiod she is born from ouranos, the sea foam. In Homer she is the daughter of zeus and dione, like a female version of zeus. Having a family in homer’s version is needed (there’s a story where Ares hurts her and she goes to Zeus her father for comfort).
describe the myth of ovid’s pygmalion
Sculptor named pygmalion falls in love
with his creation (which is a statue of
aphrodite). He prays to aphrodite and
she makes the statue come to life. The
statue is named Galatea.
He marries Galatea and they have a child
named Paphos.
who are galateas and pygmalion’s descendants
Paphos is their child, then Cinyras, then Myrrha. Myrrha has a kid with her father Cinyras who is transformed into a myrr tree before she gives birth to adonis.
What does Zeus do to aphordite to get payback for making him fall in love with people
He makes her fall in love with a mortal named Anchises to assert his power.
Aphrodite can make anyone fall in love except 3 people who are they
Hestia, artemis and Athena (virgin goddesses)
How does aphrodite present herself to anchises, how does she act
As an unwed virgin mortal, she acts modest and shy.
what does Aphordite tell anchises as her reason for showing up to him at mount ida
she says that hermes scooped her up from a dance and brought her to mount ida, and anchises was to marry her and have children
what does Anchises do when aphordite reveals her true self after they slept together what does aphordite tell him
he pleads for her to make him unable to have children as punishment. Aphrodite just says not to tell anyone.
Who is the child of aphrodite and anchises
Aeneas (related to greek stem that means grief which aphrodite felt)
what 2 things make aeneas significant
he is the last of the demi-gods, after him gods and humans no longer breed. He is trojan but survives the destruction of troy, he establishes bloodline in rome.
Aphrodite doesn’t want Anchises to raise Aeneas so what does she do?
She takes Aeneas and will bring him back in 5 years
what does Aphrodite command Anchises to do when Aeneas is born?
She commands him not to tell anyone she birthed him and tells him to say it was a nymph.
