Q

What is a mediator?

A

Mediator: A 3rd variable caused by the predictor variable (IV) that in turn causes the outcome variable (DV)

Mediation: implies a situation where the effect of the independent variable (IV) on the dependent variable (DV) is best explained using a 3rd mediating variable

Q

What is the mediation model?

Q

Why is it better to use in experimental design rather than correlational design?

A

Because mediator implies causality (which correlational design cannot show)

Q

Why is mediation important?

A
  1. Fine-grained understanding of the mechanism
  2. Testing competing theories
  3. Allows for intervention

Q

How to test mediation model?

A
  1. Ensure that arrows are all pointing the right direction

2. Statistically control the mediator – if it has an effect on the DV (meaning the DV is changed), it is the mediator
