#8 Step 6: Mediator Flashcards
What is a mediator?
Mediator: A 3rd variable caused by the predictor variable (IV) that in turn causes the outcome variable (DV)
Mediation: implies a situation where the effect of the independent variable (IV) on the dependent variable (DV) is best explained using a 3rd mediating variable
What is the mediation model?
Triangle between IV, Mediator and DV.
IV — DV
IV — Mediator
Mediator — DV
Why is it better to use in experimental design rather than correlational design?
Because mediator implies causality (which correlational design cannot show)
Why is mediation important?
- Fine-grained understanding of the mechanism
- Testing competing theories
- Allows for intervention
How to test mediation model?
- Ensure that arrows are all pointing the right direction
2. Statistically control the mediator – if it has an effect on the DV (meaning the DV is changed), it is the mediator
