8. Solutions Flashcards
Solution
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of a solute and a solvent where the path of the light is not visible and it cannot be separated by filtration.
Non-newtonian Fluid
A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid where the viscosity can can change when under force to be either more liquid or more solid. Does not have constant viscosity.
Saturated solution
A solution in which the maximum amount of solute has been dissolved in a solvent. Any more solute added will sit as crystals on the bottom of the container creating a supersaturated solution, that contains more than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved at a given temperature.
Suspension
- A suspension is a mixture of two or more components.Small solid particles are mixed in a liquid but do not dissolve. If left to sit, particles will separate from the liquid and either fall to the bottom or rise to the top.
- Can be separated by filtration
- May scatter light or be opaque
Colloid
- A colloid is a mixture is two or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined ( they can be separated ). They are a special type of mixture where tiny particles of one substance are scattered through another substance. Cream is a colloid as it’s made up of tiny particles of fat dispersed in water.
- Cannot be separated by filtration
- Scatter light
Types of Mixtures
Compare a solution, collid, suspension
The key difference between suspension and colloid is that the particles in a suspension are larger than the particles in a colloid.
Separating solutions, colloids and suspensions.
a true solution can be seperated using Distillation. colloid is a heterogeneous mixture and its components can be separated by centrifugation. The solute particles settle when a suspension is left undisturbed if the suspension is unstable. Sediment can be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down the concentration gradient.
Emulsion
An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are usually immiscible but under specific transforming processes will adopt a macroscopic homogeneous aspect and a microscopic heterogeneous one. In an emulsion, one liquid is dispersed in the other.
Solution v Colloid
A colloid is a mixture containing dispersed or suspended particles in the dispersion medium. In contrast, a solution is a mixture containing one or more solutes in the solvent.
