Storage and Transport Temperature
Specimens must be stored and transported at the temperature indicated in the laboratory quality manual. All personnel must be trained in the appropriate safety and packaging procedure. Specimens are packaged and transported at the correct temperature, by courier, taxi, air or laboratory staff or health care personnel.
Specimen Referral
Record the test or specimen being referred and the date of referral. The name of the technician entering the specimen information should be recorder. Track specimen delivery to the referral laboratory and result turnaround time.
Specimen Storage
Each laboratory has its’ own policy for storage and retention of specimen. Blood and body fluid samples are stored in the fridge, slides are usually filed and Pathology specimens are stored in formalin. The specimens are stored usually by day of receipt or by laboratory number. A computer tracking system or daily log is used. The storage system must be organized and easily accessible for retrieval of the specimen.
Specimen Disposal
Dispose specimen according to laboratory policy and procedure and Government regulations.
