8 - Memory Flashcards
8-1 Studying Memory
what is memory?
learning that has persisted over time, information that has been stored and can be retrieved.
how can psychologists know that learning has persisted?
recall, recognition, relearning
what is recall?
retrieving information that is not currently in your conscious awareness but that was learned at an earlier time.
what kind of question could test your recall?
a fill-in-the-blank question
what is recognition?
identifying items previously learned.
what kind of question could test recognition?
a multiple-choice question.
8-2 Memory Models
what are information-processing models for memory?
analogies that compare human memory to a computer’s interface
according to the information processing model, what three things must happen to remember somethign?
encoding - get information into our brain
storage - retain that information
retrieval - later get the information back out.
what are two main differences between the information processing of computer memory and human memory?
1) our memories are less literal and more fragile than a computers
2) computers process information sequentially; our dual-track brain processes many things simultaneously by means of parallel processing.
