8- correlations Flashcards
1
Q
what are correlations
A
technique for analysing the strength of the relationship between co-variables
2
Q
what is the correlation coefficient
A
- strength of the correlation
- between -1 and 1 (1 is strong positive and -1 is strong negative)
3
Q
what are the 3 types of correlations
A
- positive (one increases, the other increases)
- negative (one increases, other decreases)
- no correlation (no relationship between variables)
4
Q
positive evaluation of correlations (3)
A
+ can establish strength between 2 variables precisely
+ can investigate things that couldn’t be manipulated for ethical/practical reasons
+ predications can be made about the variables
5
Q
negative evaluation of correlations (3)
A
- can’t demonstrate cause and effect
- may be a confounding variable which influences both
- don’t measure curvilinear relationships
