8. competition between species Flashcards
competition
all organisms are in competition for scarce resources
interspecific competition
competition between different species is called interspecific.
This can cause the decline of one species.
E.g introduction of the grey squirrel has declined our native red squirrel in scotland.
This competition can be reduced by reaching a compromise e.g different feeding times, eating different food, nesting in different areas.
intraspecific competition
competition between members of the same species is called intraspecific competition.
This can be fierce as need exactly the same resources. ( food, mates, shelter).
Resources -> survival of the fittest.
Intraspecific is often territorial.
An individual or breeding pair will defend and utilise a food supply & preserve it for their own use. Territory holders tend to be solitary and defend their range using social signals, scent markings & occasionally fights.
energy in terms of defending territory
It is only efficient in energy terms to defend a territory big enough for its needs. Individuals that try to defend an area, which is too big, will be at a selective advantage.
0
individuals or pairs fit enough to defend a territory..
individuals or pairs fit enough to defend a territory will survive & breed, this way the food resources can be utilised to the maximum efficiency.
