how does somatic fusion work?

Remove the cell wall using the enzyme cellulose, this leaves a structure called a protoplast - plant cell contents without a cell wall.
Then the protoplast can be fused to produce a hybrid protoplast
This is induced to produce a cell wall and this divides to produce a mass of cells called a callus.
This can then develop into a plant that contains a mix of the parental genes
->produce disease resistant crops.
