A rectangular box made of clear plastic allowing visualisation of patient

Key properties of an induction chamber?
A
- needs to regularly cleaned (bacterial transmission)
- have a hinged lid which can be tightly closed
- be large enough for the patient to lie comfortably in lateral recumbency
- two ports- one for volatile gas and oxygen and one for scavenging waste

What is the induction procedure for using a chamber?
A
Fill the chamber with 100% oxygen for 3-5 mins prior to turning on the vaporiser.

What is the ideal volatile gas to use in an induction chamber?
A
Sevoflurane as it has no smell- reduces stress and breath-holding

What are the disadvantages of induction chambers?
A
- Pungent gas=breath holding
- risk of cardiac arrhythmias due to circulating CO2 in the blood
- health hazard with air pollution
