‘Duty Of Care’
A moral or legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others.
Define ‘Anaesthesia’
A reversible immobile unconscious state that makes the patient unaware of noxious stimuli and induces amnesia. (Murrell and Ford-Fennah, 2011)
Define ‘Induction’
Inducing anaesthesia by the administration of a specific quantity of medicine directed by a veterinary. May be carried out by a veterinary nurse or with supervision, a SVN, but not by any other person.
Define ‘Administration’
Administrating medicine incrementally or to effect to induce and maintain anaesthesia. May be carried out only by a veterinary surgeon.
Who is responsible for Maintaining Anaesthesia?
Maintaining anaesthesia is the responsibility of the veterinary surgeon, but a suitably trained person may assist by acting as the veterinary surgeons hands (to provide assistance which does not involve practicing veterinary surgery) eg- moving dials.
What does ‘Incremental’ mean?
Giving the animal a specified amount of medication and then topping it up when/if needed.
What does ‘To effect’ mean?
Giving the animal medication until the desired effect is achieved.
