7.E.1.2 | Cell Organelles Flashcards
Cytoplasm & Function
A jelly-like substance inside the cell that holds the organelles in place (prevents the cell’s organelles from slamming around in the cell)
Nucleus & Function
The “brain” of a cell that controls & directs all of the cell’s activities.
Mitochondria & Function
The “powerhouse” of the cell, where cellular respiration occurs. This organelle produces the energy cells need to function.
Nuclear Membrane & Function
The envelope surrounding the nucleus that allows certain substances to enter & leave the nucleus.
Cell Membrane & Function
The boundary that surrounds a cell & controls which substances can enter or leave the cell. (Not rigid like the cell wall.)
Chloroplast & Function
An organelle in plant & algae cells that converts energy from sunlight into chemical energy that the plant can use.
Prokaryotic Cell
A cell with no nucleus.
Vacuole & Function
A storage organelle containing air, liquids, food, & waste products.
- Plant Cells: Large, stores water, nutrients, waste products, ect.
- Animal Cells: Small, lysosomes break down nutrients and other materials.
Cell Wall & Function
A stiff, rigid structure that surrounds & protects a plant cell.
Cell Contains a Cell Wall

Cell Contains a Chloroplast
