7.E.1.1 | Protists Flashcards
Paramecium
The most complex and specialised of protists. Moves and eats using cilia.

Cilia
Hair-like structures that extend from the surface of certain protists that help them move and eat.

Protist
A unicellular organism witth a nucleus.

Flagellum (pl. flagella)
A long, thin, tail-like structure that enables many protozoa to move and swim.

Amoeba
A unicellular protist. Moves and eats using pseudopods.

Autotroph
An organism that produces it’s own food.

Heterotroph
An organism that does not make it’s own food.

Chlorophyll
A green pigment that absorbs sunlight, allowing an organism to preform photosynthesis.

Volvox
A colony of individual alga cells working together. Individual cells each have 2 flagella and eat primarily through photosynthesis.

Euglena
A type of protist that is both plant- and animal-like. Moves using flagellum and either makes it’s own food or eats outside organisms. Lacks cell walls.

Red Eyespot
A structure in Euglena and some Volvox that detects and guides the oganim towards light.

Pseuopods
A temporary projection of cytoplasm that helps certain protists eat and move.
