Q

Discuss possible future developments in ICT and their impact on transport in the UK (11 marks jan 09)

A

Booking systems to place bookings for trains and cars, make sure you have a ticket before travelling, personalised route planning means travel companies know how many on each train/bus and only need to provide transport for that number – reduced expenditure on running empty buses/trains and all those that do run, everyone has a seat. Less pollution as they can be environmentally friendly, less cars/busses in the city centres less need to repair the roads as weight of vehicles is lighter, those that still need to drive can get to their destination quicker.
Car Trains – ICT to monitor distance to car in front, allows vehicles to travel close together and faster meaning that individuals get to their destination faster and less stressed, more cars can travel on the same amount of roads meaning that less roads will need to be built. Malfunction in one of the vehicles can cause a large accident as there is likely to be more vehicles involved.

Less accidents and vehicles have monitoring systems and can react faster than individuals meaning cars can travel faster and there will be less accidents on the road

Q

Miss Jones wants to make use of new developments in ICT to assist her marketing the landscape gardening business.
Discuss possible future developments in ICT and their impact on marketing the landscape gardening business (11 marks Jan 11)

A

Areas of discussion may focus on 3D visual images and virtual walkthrough of completed gardens to show customers, increased use of marketing databases to target specific clients who match the profile, use of the internet and email through adverts and search engines to target individuals, use of video techniques for local news. The point needs to be made for Band 1.
For Band 2 the point needs to be expanded and additional information added – this can either be through the use of an explanation or consequence: she could use marketing databases that will allow her to find customers who are going to be receptive to her product and be able to afford it. This will allow her to ensure that the budget that she spends is likely to achieve results and not be wasted.
For Band 3 the initial point needs to be explained in depth – advantage of disadvantage and a consequence of that point.
For marks in Band 4 there is both a positive and a negative consequence – either of the same point or different points.

Virtual reality models of objects allow the shopper to see all dimensions and real life size of objects – can see the object in a model of their own home, less likely to return the object. Smellovision – able to get full impact of the object, see texture and feel of the object. Virtual reality stores, able to walk through the store and select items, without leaving the home, - benefit to elderly and disabled, environmental impacts and consequences. Use of barcodes and barcode scanners on portable devices – allows price comparisons and immediate ordering – can direct to cheaper locally with directions.

Q

Discuss the impacts and consequences to the transport system that could be bought about by
future developments in ICT (11 marks June 12)

A

Use of satellite navigation with head up display – less rick of accidents and do not have to look down, improved traffic handling within the application, avoidance of traffic jams or increased traffic on minor roads as all traffic diverted
Smartphone systems allowing trains and buses to be tracked, know where it is and if you are going to miss it.
Automatic driving system can accelerate and brake automatically causing less accidents, cars can drive close together allowing more traffic and traffic can drive faster, rick of breakdown of system causes large scale crashes, drivers confidence based on system not their ability

EJO wants disabled visitors to be able to enjoy all facilities that the art gallery offers (11 marks Jan 13)

A

Points may include:
Automatic sensors to open doors and lifts which will allow for easy access throughout the gallery meaning they can be independent and do not need to rely on having staff to open and close doors. Sensors which disable people wear identify the type of disability that they have. When standing in front of the exhibit it can alter the display to suit - for example change to large font or voice which allows them to still enjoy and get most out of the exhibit.
Use of virtual reality to allow a walkthrough the exhibit without physically being there allowing for full interaction with the exhibits increasing the number of people that can enjoy the exhibit and increasing the potential revenue for sales.
