7a) case study key terms Flashcards
What is a case study?
A detailed study of a single individual or small group of people
What kind of data is collected most often?
Qualitative data is usually produced when conduction a case study
What methods are used within a case study?
-brain imaging
-cognitive testing
-questionnaires
-interviews
What is triangulation?
Using more than one method to check the validity of the findings - corroborating data across different sources
Outline the case of Genie
-investigating the effect of neglect
-neglect on development
Outline the case of David Reimer
Investigating whether gender is biologically determined or socialised
How can case studies be so powerful?
-provide rich qualitative data
-often unattainable through other research
-allows for comprehensive understanding of complex human behaviour and mental processes
How does the study of HM refute the MSM?
The model does not explain memory distortion
How does the study of HM support the MSM?
Shows long term and short term memory are two distinct stores
What is a longitudinal study?
Means they follow the individual or group over an extended period of time
What is a pro of a longitudinal study?
Allows to look at changes over time
What is a con of a longitudinal study?
-participants may drop out
-can lead to a smaller sample size
What are the strengths of a case study?
-offer high levels of validity
-allows multiple methods to be used (triangulation)
-can study events that researchers cannot ethically or practically manipulate
-efficient
What are limitations of case studies?
-researcher bias may be present
-lack of control
-lacks scientific rigour
