What happens to the brain during the disease of dementia?
Permanent and progressive loss of functioning tissue in the brain.
There is no cure, and 5% of the older population will get dementia. There is normally a gradual onset.
What happens during the stages of dementia?
1(You become aware of the changes and become stressed out and fearful)
2(You have difficulty communicating and understanding some words. as the stage becomes worse you will become incontinent**you recognize people without knowing names.)
3(Ability to walk, sit up straight, speak, leave bed, or eat stop)
Is delirium long term or temporary?
Temporary state of confusion that will be resolved once the problem is (uti/infection are exs.)
What is the most common cause of dementia?
Alzheimer’s disease. 60% of all cases are Alzheimer’s which is a progressive disease caused by things like genes, age and TBI. The onset is usually 65 & older.
Alzheimer’s- the brain shrinks and gets deposits of protein plaques and tangles the which causes nerve cells in the brain to deteriorate.

Blood vessels, supplying oxygen to the brain or damaged certain areas of the brain or deprived of oxygen and damaged. Men are more apt to this disease, and it comes on suddenly due to clots or a stroke.
What will the population of elders be in 2030? (65+older)
At least 72 million.
What is the percentage of people with chronic diseases?
80% percent of people over 65 have at least one chronic disease and over 50% have 2.
Factors leading to long-term care admissions
Temporary acute illnesses (stroke, fracture, covid)
-continuous monitoring treatment
-need assistance with ADL’s
How long are short term stay admissions?
3 months or less to get someone back to their new norm
What causes someone to have to be put on extended stay admission?
A physical or mental disability makes it impossible for you to go home and care for yourself.
75% or more residents require at least 3 ADL’s
What is the sandwich era?
The children become the caregivers
What is true of changing family roles
There can be resentment and jealousy among the siblings.
What happens with the young resident?
They experience anger, depression, and frustration due to loss of control. Allow choices in food, activities, and clothing!
