7.6 Solubility Equilibrium & the Solubility Product Constant Flashcards
Solubility Equilibrium
A dynamic equilibrium between a solute and a solvent in a saturated solution in a closed system
When does a dynamic equilibrium form?
When the rate of dissolution equals the rate of precipitation
Dissolution
A solid compound dissociates and dissolves into its ions
Precipitation
The aqueous ions collide and reform the solid
What is the solubility product constant (Ksp)?
The equilibrium constant for a solid ionic substance dissolving in an aqueous solution
When is the Ksp value higher?
When a substance is more soluble
What happens when anions and cations are more highly charged?
- They are less soluble
- It takes more energy to break the ionic bonds in the crystal lattice
What is the molar solubility of an ionic compound?
The maximum quantity that will dissolve in a given volume of solvent at a particular temp to form a saturated solution
What is Ksp based on?
- Concentration
- Does not change with the amount of solute or solvent
Common Ion Effect
If a common ion is added, the equilibrium shifts towards the reactants
