7.4 - Qualitative Changes in Equilibrium Systems Flashcards
Le Chatelier’s Principle
When a chemical system at equilibrium is disturbed by a change in property,
the system adjusts in a way that opposes the change
equilibrium shift
a change in concentration to restore an equilibrium
state
Changing pressure
If the pressure increases, the amount of collisions also increases
➢ This in turn increases the rate of reaction for the quantity of gas
molecules that can successfully collide
❖ Therefore, the increase pressure will always shift the equilibrium towards
the side that has less moles of gas (based on the balanced chemical
equation)
➢ The decrease of pressure will always shift the equilibrium towards the
side with more moles of gas
Temp and Energy
In a thermochemical equation, we can generalize that thermal energy is a
product in an exothermic reaction and a reactant in an endothermic reaction
➢ Equilibrium will shift in the direction to compensate for energy changes
