7.4- Homeostasis and Cells Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions
What is tissue?
a group of similar cells that performs a particular function
What is an organ?
groups of tissues that work together (example- individual muscles)
What is an organ system?
a group of organs that work together to perform a specific function (example- stomach, pancreas, and intestines work together as the digestive system)
What is a receptor?
area which “receives” a specific chemical signal either on the outside of the cell membrane or inside the cytoplasm
How do individual cells maintain homeostasis?
to maintain homeostasis, unicellular organisms grow, respond to their environment, transform energy, and reproduce.
How do the cells of multicellular organisms work together to maintain homeostasis?
the cells of multicellular organisms become specialized for particular tasks and communicate with one another to maintain homeostasis.
