7.1- Life is Cellular Flashcards
What is the cell theory?
The cell theory states: 1) all living things are made up of cells 2) cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things 3) new cells are produced from existing cells
How do microscopes work? What types are there?
Most microscopes use lenses to magnify the image of an object by focusing light or electrons Types include light compound microscope, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope
How are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells different?
Prokaryotic cells do not separate their genetic material within a nucleus (like a studio apartment) Eukaryotic cells separate the genetic material from the rest of the cell (like a mansion)
What is a cell?
Basic units of life that make up all living things
What is a cell membrane? What are they made of?
A thin flexible barrier that surrounds every cell. Membranes are made up of a phospholipid bilayer, hydrophilic phosphoric heads and hydrophobic lipid tails.
What is a nucleus?
A large membrane-enclosed structure that contains genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cell’s activities.
What is a eukaryote?
cells that have their DNA enclosed in a nucleus
What is a prokaryote?
cells that do not enclose their DNA in a nucleus
