7.4 Flashcards
1
Q
Name the site of glycolysis
A
The cytoplasm
2
Q
Describe the process of glycolysis (4 marks)
A
- glucose is converted to two molecules of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, using up 2 ATPs in the process
- each glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate is then converted to pyruvate with each reaction using 2ATPs and reducing one NAD
- net output is 2ATPs and 2NADH
3
Q
Explain why glucose must be phosphorylated by ATP in glycolysis
A
Destabilises the structure by adding a phosphate group from the ATP, allowing the conversion to pyruvate
4
Q
State the ratio of glucose to pyruvate produced in glycolysis
A
1:2 glucose:pyruvate
5
Q
State the net gain of ATP in glycolysis
A
+2ATPs
