6.7 Flashcards
Give a definition of the non-specific immune response
The generalised immune response that can target any unknown pathogen
When the skin is damaged, the site of infection becomes red and there is localised swelling. Explain why this occurs.
Inflammation, cause by liquid moving into infected tissue and more blood flow to the area
Describe the role of interferons in limiting infection
Made in response to pathogens to recruit other immune cells and trigger a greater immune response
Describe the role of phagocytes in limiting infection
Undertake in phagocytosis, finding pathogens by chemotaxis, “swallowing” them and breaking them down using digestive enzymes
Describe the role of lysozymes in limiting infection
Tear holes in peptidoglycan (bacterial) cell walls to allow water to enter and kill the cell
