What are the conditions for an Aborted Engine Start?
Memory item ‘Aborted Engine Start’
Do the ABORTED ENGINE START checklist for one or more of the following abort start conditions:
• the N1 or N2 does not increase or increases very slowly after the EGT increases
• there is no oil pressure indication by the time that the engine is stable at idle
• the EGT does not increase by 15 seconds after the engine start lever is moved to IDLE
• the EGT quickly nears or exceeds the start limit
Memory Item;

- Autopilot(if engaged)………Disengage
- Autothrottle(if engaged)…..Disengage
- F/D switches(both)………….OFF
- Set the following gear up pitch attitude and thrust:
Flaps extended………….10 degrees and 80% N1
Flaps up……………………4 degrees and 75% N1
APU Fire
- APU fire switch…….Confirm………Pull, rotate to the stop, and hold for 1 second.
- APU switch………..OFF
Cabin Altitude Warning or Rapid Depressurization
- Don Oxygen Masks and set regulators to 100%
- Establish crew communications
- Pressurization mode selector…………….MAN
- Outflow VALVE swith………………………..Hold in CLOSE until the outflow VALVE indication shows fully closed
- IF Cabin Altitude is uncontrollable:
Passanger signs………………………..ON
PASS OXYGEN switch……………….ON

Engine Fire
- Autothrottle(if engaged)……………….Disengage
- Thrust lever(affected engine)……………….Confirm…….Close
- Engine start lever(affected engine)……….Confirm…….CUTOFF
- Engine fire switch(affected engine)……….Confirm…….PULL
To manually unlock the engine fire switch, press the override and pull. - IF the engine fire switch or ENG OVERHEAT light is illuminated:
Engine fire switch………………………Rotate to the stop and hold for 1 second.
IF after 30 seconds the engine fire switch or ENG OVERHEAT light stays illuminated:
Engine fire switch……………………..Rotate to the other stop and hold for 1 second.
Engine Limit or Surge or Stall
- Autothrottle(if engaged)…………………..Disengage
- Thrust lever(affected engine)……………Confirm…….Retard until engine indications stay within limits or the thrust lever is closed.
Engine Overheat
- Autothrottle(if engaged)……………….Disengage
- Thrust lever(affected engine)………..Confirm…………Close
- IF the ENG OVERHEAT light stays illuminated:

Landing Configuration
- Assure correct airplane landing configuration.
Loss of Thrust on Both Engines
- Engine Start switches(both)…………………………FLT
- Engine start levers(both)……………………………..CUTOFF
- When EGT decreases:
Engine start levers(both)……………………………..IDLE detent - If EGT reaches redline or there is no increase in EGT within 30 seconds:

IF EGT again reaches redline or there is no increase in EGT within 30 seconds, repeat as needed.
Runaway Stabilizer

Assure correct airplane take-off configuration.
Warning Horn (Intermittent)

- IF the intermittent warning horn sounds or a CABIN ALTITUDE light (if installed and operative) illuminates IN FLIGHT at an airplane flight altitude above 10,000 feet MSL:
Don the oxygen masks and set the regulators to 100%
Establish crew communications.

If the intermittent warning horn sounds or a TAKEOFF CONFIG light (if installed & operative) illuminates on the ground when advancing the thrust levers to takeoff thrust:
Assure correct airplane takeoff configuration.
Emergency Descent
- Announce the emergency descent. The pilot flying will advise the cabin crew, on the PA system, of impending rapid descent. The pilot monitoring will advise ATC and obtain the area altimeter setting.
- Passenger signs……………………………………ON
- Without delay, descend to the lowest safe altitude or 10,000ft, whichever is higher.
- ENGINE START switches (both)………………CONT
- Thrust levers (both)………………………………..Reduce thrust to minimum or as needed for anti-ice
- Speedbrake…………………………………………..Flight Detent
- Set target speed to Mmo/Vmo *If structural integrity is in doubt, limit speed as much as possible and avoid high maneuvering loads.

What is Max Motoring during an engine start?
Maximum motoring occurs when N2 acceleration is less than 1% in approximately 5 seconds.
Normal starter duty cycle:
Multiple consecutive start attempts are permitted. Each start attempt is limited to 2 minutes of starter usage.
A minimum of 10 seconds is needed between start attempts.
Extended engine motorings:
- Starter usage is limited to 15 minutes for the first two extended engine motorings. A minimum of 2 minutes is needed between each attempt.
- For the third and subsequent extended engine motorings, starter usage is limited to 5 minutes. A minimum of 10 minutes is needed between each attempt.
If the fluid leak continues after the engine is stable at idle, do one of the following:
- shut down the engine for maintenance action, or • run the engine at idle thrust for up to 5 minutes. If the fluid leak stops during this time, no maintenance action is needed, or
- shut down and restart the engine. Run the engine at idle thrust for up to 5 minutes. If the fluid leak stops during this time, no maintenance action is needed.
- For the first flight of the day, at airport elevations at or above 2,000 feet MSL, if the temperature is below 5°C/41°F, consider placing the Ignition select switch to BOTH before starting the engines. This may increase the likelihood of a successful engine start on the first attempt.
Do not start engines if the airplane is within:
• xm of a sealed building
• xm of other airplanes
• xm of any exposed public area or unsealed building
• xm of a fuel (or any other flammable material) spill.
- 5m of a sealed building
- 8m of other airplanes
- 15m of any exposed public area or unsealed building
- 15m of a fuel (or any other flammable material) spill.
Additionally, the airplane shall not be operated within the distances noted below of any other airplane, fueling equipment or exposed public area that lie to the rear of and within a 15° arc either side of the exhaust outlet of that engine:
- at or below normal slow taxiing thrust - 30m
- at thrust used to initiate movement of a stationary airplane - 46m. For normal operations, no more than 30% N1 should be required for ground maneuvering and not above 40% N1 without ATC or engineering approval.
