7.3 the atomic spectrum of hydrogen Flashcards

1
Q

what is a continuous emission spectrum

A

narrow beam of light was shot through a prisme, seperated the white light into different colours of the rainbow. Therefore, this spectrum contains all the wavelenghts of visible light.

Q

what is a line emission spectrum (unique to hydrogen)

A

if you pass a current through a tube containing hyfrogen gas, electrons in hydrogen gas will absorb energy, to get rid of the excess energy, they emit light. the colours were not all the colors of the rainbow, but 4 colors. Therefore, this spectrum does not contain the wavelenghts of all visible light .

Q

why do we say that the energy of hydrogen electrons is quantized?

A

Because only certain enrgies are allowed for the electrons in the hydrogen atoms, it is not a spectrum, there are 4 specific energy level that are aloud. Can only have certian discrete energy values
