When a person tries to injure, hurt or harm their body without the intention of killing themselves.

Why do people tend to engage in NSSI?
To “punish themselves”, manage overwhelming painful feelings

If you suspect a HS is engaging in NSSI behaviour, what should you do?
Ask them directly
If a HS is engaging in NSSI behaviour, what are some actions you should/could take?
Don’t act shocked or imply judgement if they disclose NSSI
Check immediate safety
Ask about if they have thoughts of suicide
Use CARE formula
Check if HS has professional support,
Contact ISS if you do not know how to deal with the interaction
Develop a safety plan if possible
Debrief with ISS after interaction
Return to taking interactions if comfortable
Do you debrief with an ISS after every NSSI interaction?
No, only when needed
