7.2.2 Issues In Systematic Reviews And Meta-analyses Flashcards
What are some issues with meta analysis?
Heterogeneity between studies
Variable quality of the studies
Publication bias in selection of studies
What is heterogeneity between studies?
Observed effects in studies are more different than we would expect by chance
What causes heterogeneity between studies?
Differences in methods
Methodological heterogeneity
Differences in patients, interventions and outcomes
Clinical heterogeneity
What can we do about heterogeneity between studies?
Should not pool studies that have a different measurement
Fixed effect model- assumes that studies are estimating exactly the same true effect size
Random effects model- incorporates heterogeneity by assuming that studies are estimating similar true effect size
