What do B blockers do?
Block NorAd, reducing inotropy and chronotropy also decreases renin secretion
What are some adverse effects of BBs?
BLOCKER
Bronchospasm
Lethargy
Heart block
Erectile dysfunction
Raynauds
Mask tachycardia- sign of insulin induced hypoglycaemia
What are some examples of beta blockers?
Labetalol
Bisoprolol
Metoprolol
-lol suffix
Which beta blockers are selective for which receptor?
A-N start =B1
O-Z start = B2
Not -olol blocks alpa and beta
When can you not give BBs?
Asthma
COPD
Liver failure
Haemodynamic instability
What are some important drug interactions for BBs?
Alkylamines e.g. Verapamil
Benzothiazepines e.g. Diltiazem
Can lead to asystole
How do alpha blockers work?
Selective antagonist for a1 adrenoceptors
Relatively safe in renal disease
What do Alpha Blockers do?
Reduce peripheral vascular resistance
Can be used in urinary tract, including bladder neck and prostate, especially in BPH (tamulosin)
What are some adverse effects of alpha blockers?
Postural hypotension
Dizziness
Syncope
Headache
Fatigue

Postural hypotension

Dihydropyridines, can cause oedema
