7.2 Flashcards
What is the Alimentary Canal?
It’s a long tube running from one end of the body to the other. Its mainly used for digestion.
How many stages are of digestion? Name them
There are 4 stages of digestion…
Ingestion
Digestion
Assimilation or absorption
Egestion
Ingestion:
When you take in food in your mouth.. it’s called ingestion.
Digestion:
When the food has been digested… it’s called digestion.
Assimilation:
When the food is absorbed into the bloodstream… it’s called assimilation or absorption.
Egestion:
When the food that is not needed is removed or the removal of waste products from the body is called egestion.
STARCH BREAKS DOWN INTO?
STARCH BREAKS INTO SIMPLE SUGARS WITH THE HELP OF AMYLASE.
PROTEIN BREAKS DOWN INTO?
PROTEIN BREAKS INTO AMINO ACIDS WITH THE HELP OF PROTEASE.
FAT BREAKS DOWN INTO?
FAT BREAKS DOWN INTO FATTY ACIDS AND GLYCEROL WITH THE HELP OF LIPASE.
What is Mechanical and Chemical digestion?
Mechanical digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller pieces without chemical change to the food molecules. It usually occurs in the mouth ONLY.
Chemical digestion: The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules.
WHAT ARE BILE SALTS?
Bile salts are salts or stuff that break down food that has been mechanically digested into droplets. They dissolve into food and break them down from drops to droplets.
FATS BREAKDOWN?
FATS BREAK DOWN FRM LARGE PIECES OF FOOD INTO SMALLER ONES THEN THEY TURN INTO DROPS N THEN BILE SALTS BREAK THEM DOWN THEN THEY TURN INTO DROPLETS N THEN MOLECULES N THEN TO FATTY ACIDS N GLYCEROL.
PROTEINS BREAKDOWN?
MECHANICAL DIGESTION
WATER IN DIGESTIVE JUICES DISSOLVES FOOD
SMALL PIECES OF FOOD FORM N THERE IS SOME JUICE AS WELL
PROTEIN MOLECULES
POLYPEPTIDES
AMINO ACIDS
