A

Q
Explain how fractional distillation works
A
- crude oil vaporised + fed into fractionating column (hot at bottom, cooler at top)
- vapour moves up column - getting cooler as they go up
- hydrocarbons condense to liquids when they reach the level that is their boiling point
- hydrocarbons with smallest molecules have lowest BP - gases collected at top
- fractions collected at the bottom of the column contain hydrocarbons with the highest boiling points - solids at room temperature
