Q

Explain how fractional distillation works

A
  • crude oil vaporised + fed into fractionating column (hot at bottom, cooler at top)
  • vapour moves up column - getting cooler as they go up
  • hydrocarbons condense to liquids when they reach the level that is their boiling point
  • hydrocarbons with smallest molecules have lowest BP - gases collected at top
  • fractions collected at the bottom of the column contain hydrocarbons with the highest boiling points - solids at room temperature
