Duty to patients
Care of patients is the first concern
-there is a legal duty of care once a physician assumes responsibility for a patient
A Physician’s Fitness to Practice
They must:
-be competent in what they do
-establish and maintain relationships with patients
-respect patients’ autonomy
-act responsibly if they/a colleague fall ill & their performance suffers
-respect their position in society
-respect that their work gives them privileged access to patients (some of whom are vulnerable)
Paternalistic
Doctor decides what the most appropriate treatment is
Doctor gives selective information to the patient
Cons of Paternalistic
Adopts too narrow meaning of well-being/ best interests of the patient
Patients suffer “illness”, doctors treat “diseases”
Failure to integrate “scientific” and “social” concepts of disease and illness
Doesn’t have due emphasis on patient autonomy
