7.1 atoms and radiation Flashcards
What does a radioactive substance contain?
Unstable nuclear that becomes stable by emitting radiation
How many types of radiation are there?
There are three main types of radiation from radioactive substances (a, b, and y)
When does radioactive decay happen?
Radioactive decay is a random event – you can’t predict when it will happen
What do radiation radioactive sources emit?
A, B, and Y radiation
What does A represent?
Alpha radiation
What does B represent?
Beta radiation
What does Y represent?
Gamma radiation
What is Alpha radiation?
Alpha particles, (each composed of two protons and two neutrons) or omitted by unstable nuclear
What is beta radiation?
Beta particles that are high energy electrons created in, and emitted from, unstable nuclei
What is gamma radiation?
Electromagnetic radiation emitted from unstable nuclei in radioactive substances
