7.1,2,3 Unity & Cohesion Flashcards
Unity
Relating to elements inside the Garden that work well together
Cohesion
Relating to elements inside and outside the Garden that work well together
Creating a one-ness by making a garden which is in harmony with its surroundings.
Where elements relate to the house and where materials, plants, etc. relate to each other to create a consistency throughout.
How to achieve unity:
Use a reduced palette of themes and elements that repeat throughout a garden.
Linking of ideas, details and styles. (formal/informal. Cottage/Contemporary)
Adding Rhythm.
Local Materials
Local materials will allow the garden to feel cohesive with the outside space, it will be more in keeping with the local area.
This can also be achieved by using similar hard landscape materials in the garden that are present in the house. Local stone etc. (also repeated brickwork patterns).
Planting - Unity and Cohesion
Using appropriate plantings to match the theme of the space. Mediterranean, Japanese, Cottage etc.
Repeating form, colour and texture and considering this also in relation to other elements such as hard landscaping and furniture.
Furniture - Unity and Cohesion
Using furniture that is sympathetic to the style of the garden. Contemporary, Japanese, Traditional
Choosing colour and tone of the furniture to sit within the garden.
Consider scale of the space and furniture to achieve unity. Choosing an appropriate size piece for the space.
