7. Wiring Systems Flashcards
What is cable basket used for?
Cable basket:
- Used to contain cable that has more than basic insulation.
- Often used for Cat 5 and Cat 6 Cables
What is Cable tray used for?
Cable Tray:
- Can be used for small industrial and commercial installs.
- Typically contain smaller SWA and MICC.
What is Conduit used for?
Conduit:
- Conduit is a pipe in which insulated conductors are contained.
- Can be easily rewired or altered at any time.
- Popular for commercial and industrial use.
3 Typed include Steel, PVC and flexible.
Sized in 20, 25, 32mm.
What is Steel Conduit used for?
Steel Conduit:
- Either heavy gauge welded or solid drawn.
- Used where strong mechanical protection is required.
What is PVC conduit used for?
PVC conduit:
- Typically heavy gauge standard impact tube.
- Joined using fittings and solvent adhesive.
- Can be bend by hand or using a bending spring.
- Used where there is risk of damp or corrosion.
What is flexible conduit used for?
Flexible Conduit:
- Made from interlinked metal spirals.
- Typically used for final connection to motors so vibrations are not transmitted through the installation.
Describe the method for determining conduit size:
- Identify the cable factor for the conductor CSA.
- Multiple the Cable factor by the number of conductors.
- Identify the appropriate part of the conduit factor table given by the length of the run and number of bends.
- Select the conduit factor that is equal or greater than the sum of all cable factors.
Name the different containment systems:

Conduit:
- PVC
- Steel
- Flexible
What is SWA used for.
SWA:
Used for the following:
- Underground wiring
- Industrial installations
- Where mechanical protection is required.
- Main supplies to dwellings.
What is MICC used for?
Mineral Insulated Copper Clad Cable:
- Seamless copper sheath making it waterproof, fire resistant and corrosion resistant.
- Ideal for hazardous or High temp installs.
