What did the puritans believe
Believed people should live a simpler life and not: play games/participate in any forms of entertainment, gamble, visit the theatre, get drunk, swear etc.
Wanted to rid church of all catholic beliefs e.g sign of the cross, displaying ornaments or colourful paintings/windows.
Opposed role of bishops as leaders of church.
Opposed role of Elizabeth as head of church- believe the church should be run by committees of elected men
What were the 3 types of puritans and what did they believe
Modern puritans- accepted religious settlement but wanted more reform of the church.
Presbyterians- didn’t accept the religious settlement and wanted more reform(e.g simpler services, abolition of bishops and each church to be run by a committee of elders), came from Scotland.
Separatists- radical group, wanted to break away from church
When was the vestments controversy and what was it
1566, puritans rejected order issued by Archbishop of Canterbury for all priests to wear vestments(as similar to what catholic priests wore).
37 priests dismissed in London, Elizabeth insisted that all priests wore the vestments, puritans failed to get the reforms they wanted
What were Thomas Cartwrights proposals and when
1570, series of lectures calling for introduction of presbytarian system of church including..
Abolition of post of archbishop and bishops.
Each church should be ruled locally by its own ministers and elders from the community
Ministers should be elected by own church congregations.
Elizabeth bitterly rejected the proposals as they would have weakened her power as SG.

How did Elizabeth deal with prophesyings
Archbishop grindal ordered to ban them, he didn’t see them as dangerous so he refused. He was dismissed by Elizabeth.
Archbishop whitgift was harsher on puritans, he ordered the whole church to accept bishops, the book of common prayer, 39 articles.
How did Elizabeth deal with separatists
Radical puritans who went underground, wanting to establish an independent church (break away from Church of England).
Separatism seen as treason by the government, Elizabeth passed the act against seditious sectaries in 1593- the gov could imprison and execute anyone associated with radical puritan beliefs
