A
- only one or two words
- to focus the reader
- good to use at the start
Eg ‘education’

short simple sentence
A
- has a verb and a subject so is grammatically correct
- has a dramatic affect
- can also speed up or slow down the story
Eg ‘this has to stop’

A
- can prompt the reader to re-think their opinion
- could be rhetorical, used to emphasise a point
Eg ‘why is education important?’

single line of dialougue
A
- good for expert or celebrity quotations
Eg ‘english is preparation for life’ says Mr Marsden

A
- builds up detail in a story or argument
Eg ‘education is essential: it makes us happpier, more confident and more successful’

- explain the complexities of a situation
- shows two sides of a situation
Eg ‘although exam stress can be hard to deal with, it ca also be beneficial by prompting you to work hard’

bracketed (parenthetical) sentence
A
- adds extra information
Eg ‘the effects of travel (which many people have not experienced) are highly beneficial’

anaphora
A
- repeated words or phrases in sentences which follow eachother
- creates emphasis
Eg forgotten students. forgotten families. whole areas of the community forgotten by the government.
