what are the three components of the model? what do they refer to? what are the two subtypes of one component?

A
  1. satisfaction level - the degree to which a partners needs are met. measured n a scale from +/-3
  2. comparison for alternatives - perceived desirability of the best alternative to the current relationship.
  3. investment size: things people will lose by leaving the relationship.
    intrinsic: things put into the relationship (i.e. money, effort, time)
    extrinsic: things brought about by the relationship (i.e. kids, memories and friends.)

  • Correlational
  • Rusbult and Martz: explains ‘battered women’
  • Goodfriend and Agnew: not as applicable to early relationships unless also measuring future plans.
  • Cannot conclude that investment causes commitment: lack of predictive validity. Poor application.
