This political party formed in 1854 from Whigs and other groups, opposed slavery to new territories, and favored internal improvements.

In the two party system, these groups differ in their ideas of how much government should be involved in our economy. Explain what the two parties believe regarding government involvement.
Democrats: gov’t should be more directly involved in regulating the economy and in providing housing, income, education, and jobs to the poor
Republicans: less gov’t regulation is the best wya to promote prosperity

They need to collect a large group of signatures of voters who support them in order to petition to be on the ballot

It is a series of statements expressing the party’s core beliefs and its position on various issues

- Multiparty systems: France has 8, Israel has 20. Hard for 1 to take control.
- One party system: China has 1 communist party. Elections are just for show. You cannot run against them. This is NOT democratic!
