7 - GIT behaviour Flashcards
How are the GIT and CNS linked?
In a bidirectional manner (by the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system).
Describe the meaning of the brain gut axis
The GIT is closely related to the brain, theres a relationship between the brain and gut. Its a bidirectional feedback loop so one affects the other. Any changes in neurochemicals in the brain affects the microbiota and any changes in the microbiota affect the brain.
What is chronic stress associated in terms of the gut?
Decrease in gastric emptying, increase in intestinal contractility, increase in gut permeability, reduced water absorption and intestinal inflammatory response.
Name 8 normal functional GIT behaviours.
Hint: SRRSLDCI
Swallowing Ruminating Regurgitating Sniffing Licking the mouth and floor Defecation ritual Caecotrophy Ingestion of non food material
What is considered abnormal behaviour related to the GIT?
Hint theres 4
- Normal behaviour in a different context
- Behaviour that is carried out excessively
- When it is causing harm to the animal
- Behaviour that has no purpose.
Name some abnormal behaviours associated with GIT disorders
Polyphagia PICA Excessive licking of surfaces Lip smacking Vomiting Tenesmus Licking the anus Scooting Aggression Restlessness Hypersalivation Rolling and kicking at abdomen Windsucking Fly-snapping Regurgitation Teeth Grinding Curling, arching back. Feather pecking Praying dog position
What 4 things can you use to differentiate GI related behaviour from psychological behaviour?
- Context of the behaviour.
- Husbandry practices
- Environmental evaluation - poor environment can cause stress
- Health status - if animal is physically healthy the issue is likely psychological.
How can we asses pain in animals?
Pain score charts
