7 DNA Flashcards
restriction enzymes
bind to and cut specific DNA sequences at the restriction sites
DNA plasmids
- are used to create recombinant DNA
- contain gene coding regions for proteins and multiple cloning sites
- plasmid DNA is cut at certain restriction site then new DNA is inserted
DNA electrophoresis
is used to separate DNA fragments based on size, weight, charge
DNA profiling
uses short tandem repeats (STRs) to distinguish unique genetic markers.
genetic engineering
DNA molecules can be manipulated/modified through technology
complimentary base pairing
adenine-thymine (2 H bonds)
cytosine-guanine (3 H bonds)
purine
A & G are double ringed structures
pyrimidine
C & T are single ring structures
restriction endonucleases
cleaves double stranded DNA which results in sticky or blunt ends
EcoRI
it recognizes the sequence GAATTC and cleaves b/w the G & A and creates sticky site
EcoRV
it recognizes GATAT and cuts b/w T and A which creates blunt ends
recombinant DNA
DNA that is combined from 2 different sources
transgenic organisms
have been genetically altered through genetic engineering
genetically modified organisms
are transgenic plants
