2 Macromolecules Flashcards
4 classes of macromolecules
carbohydrates
proteins
lipids
nucleic acids
carbs
ex: monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides
Lugol’s reagent
aka iodine
detects complex sugars
+ = dark blue
- = yellow
Benedict’s Reagent
aka copper sulfate
reacts w/ mono & disaccharides at high temps
colors show increasing conc. of simple sugars
(lowest) blue- green- yellow -red (highest)
proteins
are macromolecules that contain amino acids
Biuret Assay
= copper sulfate, copper reacts w/ peptides in protein
indicates whether a protein is present in solution
no protein = blue
small peptides = pink
higher the conc. protein = darker the purple
structural molecules
cellulose in cell wall
phospholipoid in cell membrane
functional molecules
ex: enzymes, neurotransmitters, hormones
dehydration synthesis
molecules are covalently joined together with the addition of energy and the release of a water molecule
hydrolysis
bonds are broken by adding a water molecule and the release of energy
complex sugars
= polysaccharides
starch
amylose
cellulose
Glycogen
an energy storage molecule
cellulose
super structurally stable so indigestible to most animals
paper/ grease spot test
shows if lipids are present
- put liquid on brown paper and if after dries its see through it is positive
