7. Circadian rhythms 2 Flashcards
polyphasic sleep
sleep for a couple hours, than wake up, than sleep again
extreme phase delay
for example woman that goes to bed a 6am. Hard to find work, have doctor appointment. Misaligned with the rest of the world.
what do circadian disorders mean
Misalignment between your circadian rhythm and the world around you
phase delay
difficulty falling asleep and waking up (fall asleep late)
phase advance
early sleepiness, early waking up
free-runing
sleep schedule different every night
how are circadian rhythms different from insomnia
circadian disorder = i can’t sleep now
insomnia = I can’t sleep.
But circadian disorders often produce insomnia
Irregular sleep wake rhythms disorder.
no pattern. Very severe. Person is very ill, digestion is doing things at the wrong time, cardiovascular, thermoregulation is off, all sorts of processes happen at different times.
treatment for circadian disorders
- circadian entrainment (exposure to zeitbeibers - eating at the right time, exposure to light at right time)
- phototherapy (Light mimicking light outside. Turn it on in your environment. To wake up.)
- melatonin (for the opposite effect)
how to counteract jet lag (or temporary circadian misalignment)
sleep schedule, meal schedule, light exposure schedule, melatonin
what is recommended for shift work social jet lag
to wear orange glasses outside (block blue light frequencies)
