7: Adaptive Immune System (3rd Line of Defence) Flashcards
1
Q
lymphocytes involved in 3rd LOD
A
- B cells
- T cells
2
Q
B cells differentiate into
A
- plasma cells -> antibodies
- memory B cells
3
Q
T cells differentiate into
A
- helper T cells
- killer T cells
- memory T cells
- suppressor T cells
4
Q
cell mediated immunity process
(incl. interaction btwn B and T cells)
A
- mac/B cell encounters pathogen with antigen on its surface
- mac eats/phagocytoses path (or B cell binds the antigens to its antibodies and processes the antigen) + presents antigen on its own surface via MCHII molecules + transports to lymph node
- APC presented to helper T cell with T cell receptor corresponding to that particular antigen = activates T helper cell
- helper T cell release chem messengers (cytokines?) = stimulate prod of plasma B cells + cytotoxic T cells
- plasma B -> produce antibodies which lock onto path -> neutralise + immobilise -> wait for phagocytes
- cytotoxic T “dock” with antigens on infected host cells + kill em + suppressor T cells stop after infection defeated
5
Q
MHC =
A
major histocompatibility complex
6
Q
antibody-mediated vs cell-mediated pts of comparison
A
- where matured
- defend against pathogens outside/inside cells
7
Q
antibody-mediated immunity process
A
- B cell recognises its matching antigen + binds to it (antigen-antibody complex)
- presentation of antigen via APCs via MHC II to Th cells = activates B cell
- B cell cloning itself like crazy -> differentiate into plasma and memory B cells
- plasma cells produce antibodies = help destroy path
8
Q
where are B cells produced + mature
A
bone marrow
9
Q
where are T cells produced + mature
A
produced in bone marrow but mature in the thymus gland
10
Q
comp inn vs adap imm syst
adap
A
- specific response
- has memory
- 3rd LOD
- not as quick as inn bc of immunological memory
