Q

What is the structure and function of the cell membrane?

A

Cell membrane is a double layered sheet surrounding the cell that provides protection/support and controls what goes in and out of the cell.

Q

What is diffusion? Does it require energy?

A

Diffusion is when molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lesser concentration in a liquid solution. DOES NOT require energy.

Q

What does “selective permeable” mean? What advantage is this for the cell membrane?

A

Selectively permeable means somethings can pass in and out of the membrane and some can’t. It is an advantage because it prevents anything dangerous or harmful from entering the cell.

Q

What is the difference between hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic?

A

Isotonic- H2O and sugar solution is balanced, same on both sides of membrane.
Hypertonic- If H2O and sugar solution is above strength, concentrated.
Hypotonic- If H2O and sugar solution is below strength, diluted.

Q

What is the difference between facilitated diffustion and active transport?

A

Facilitated diffusion is when protein assists in movement of glucose, sugar across cell membrane.
Active transport is going from an area of lesser concentration to an area of higher concentration.

Q

What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms? Give1 example of each,

Q

Explain cell specialization. List 3 examples.

A

Cell specialization is different roles for each type of cell.
3 examples: Red blood cells-transfer oxygen throughout the body. Muscle cells- contract and relax to move parts of body. Nerve cells-transfer info. throughout the body.
