Prejudice
Prejudice is an often negative preconception held against people within a certain group or social category
Blumer’s 4 Characteristics of a majority group
Tend to believe that they are superior to the minority group to whom the prejudice is directed
The majority group tend to believe the minority group is different from them and that they ‘do not belong’
The majority group tend to believe that they are more powerful and important than the minority group
A majority group that displays prejudiced attitudes is insecure, fearing the minority group may become more powerful and important than itself.
Discrimination
Discrimination is the unjust treatment of people due to their membership of a certain group
Direct Discrimination
When someone is treated unfairly because of their association of a certain group
Indirect Discrimination
When a practice or rule is applied to everyone and as a result unfairly disadvantages a certain group
Difference between prejudice and discrimination
The basic difference between prejudice and discrimination is that prejudice is an attitude and discrimination is behaviour arising from prejudice.
Stigma
Stigma is the feeling of shame or disgrace experienced by an individual for a characteristic that differentiates them from others.
Social Stigma
The disapproval of an individual or group based on perceived characteristics.
Self-Stigma
The result of the internalisation of negative stereotypes and can lead to poor self-efficacy and low self-esteem
