6.7 Are there treatments for AIDS and TB? Flashcards
what four antiviral drugs can be used to treat AIDS?
reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, integrase inhibitors and fusion inhibitors
what does reverse transcriptase inhibitors do?
prevent vRNA from making vDNA
what do protease inhibitors do?
Inhibit the enzymes that catalyse the construction of new viruses
what do integrase inhibitors do?
prevent viral DNA integrating into the host T cells DNA
what do fusion inhibitors do?
The inhibitor binds to one or more of the receptors involved with the HIV’s entry into the host cell, preventing entry into the cell
how can TB be killed?
antibiotics
what are the two types of antibiotics and what do they do?
bactericidal - kills bacteria
bacteriostatic - prevent the multiplication of bacteria
why do bacteria evolve quickly?
reproduce quickly, large gene pool and high rate of mutations
what is conjugation?
when plasmids are transferred between bacteria cells
what can help prevent antibiotic resistance?
only using them when needed, completing the treatment and infection control
