6.5.1.3 gravity Flashcards
What is weight
Weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity
What causes the Earth’s gravity
The gravitational field around the Earth
What does weight of an object rely on?
The gravitational strength at the point where the object is
What is the equation for the calculation of weight
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
What is weight measured in
In newtons, N
What is mass measured in
In kilograms, kg (sometimes other forms of mass, grams etc)
What is gravitational field strength measured in
Newtons per kilogram (N / kg )
Gravitational Field Strength = g
The weight of an object may be considered to act at what single point?
an objects ‘centre of mass’
What’s the relation between an object and its mass?
they are directly proportional
How is weight measured
By using a calibrated spring-balance (a newtonmeter)
On earth a persons average weight is around?
700N, 70kg
What happens to the mass of an object when it’s location is changed?
It stays the same
What is weight and how does it differ from mass?
Weight is a force due to gravity. It measures the upthrust of gravity on an object, keeping the object down. It is measured in Newtons. Mass is the total matter of an object, it is measured in kilograms.
What is work done
It is a transfer of energy.
When energy is transferred to an object, work has / is being done.
