Q

What are the properties of noble gases?

A

Inert (not reactive, due to full outer shells)

Non-flammable (won’t set on fire)

Exist as monatomic gases (single atoms not bound to anything else)

Low density (helium and neon are less dense than air)

Q

Name some uses of noble gases

A
  1. Used as a gas in filament light bulbs (non-reactive, so they won’t cause the filament to burn) - argon used for this
  2. Flash photography (stops flash filament from burning) = argon, krypton and xenon used for this
  3. To protect metals that are being welded (prevents metals reacting with oxygen) - argon and helium used for this
  4. Party balloons and airships (helium used as it is less dense than air)
