1b.5 Modern periodic table Flashcards
What classification is given to each colour coding of the period table here?
Blue = metals
Red = non-metals
… you need to know where to draw the separateion line. Rememeber that Boron is a non-metal, then work down and right in a zigzag
What classification is given to each colour coding of the period table here?
Red = reactive metals (groups 1 & 2)
Orange = transition metals
Yellow = other metals
Green = non-metals
Blue = nobel gases
What are the rows and columns of the periodic table calles?
Columns = groups
Rows = periods
What does the group tell you about an element?
How many electrons are in the outer shell
E.g. group 1 elements have one electron in the outer shell
The exception is group 0 elements (noble gases) - they have full outer shells
What does the period tell you about an element?
HOw many electron shells it has
E.g. Nitrogen is in period 2, so has two electron shells
