6.3.2 Populatons and sustainability Flashcards
What can happen to the population of a species?
Remain stable, Rise, Fall or oscillate up and down.
What determines the size of a population?
The balance between reproduction and death rate.
What is the first part of a population growth graph?
The Lag Phase
What happens in the Lag Phase of a population graph?
There are few individuals, who are adjusting to the habitat and conditions. Population growth is slow due to a shortage of breeding individuals.
What is the second part of a population growth grapth?
The Log Phase
What happens in the Log Phase of a population graph?
Resources are plentiful and conditions are good, leading to a high reproduction rate, exceeding the death rate. Leads to rapid population growth.
What happens at the third stage of a population growth graph?
Population growth starts to level off.
Birth rate decreases and death rate increases.
What happens at the final stage of a population growth graph?
Carrying capacity is reached. The population size stays stable with only minor fluctuations. Mortality and reproduction rates are the same. The habitat cant support any more individuals.
An increase in what will cause a population increase?
Birth Rate and Immigration
An increase in what will cause a population decrease?
Death rate and emigration
What are limiting factors?
Factors that
